BOD is the amount of dissolved oxygen consumed by micro-organisms while decomposing the organic matter in water; a higher BOD means more organic pollution.

Water bodies naturally contain a small amount of dissolved oxygen (DO). When organic waste (sewage, food matter) enters the water, aerobic bacteria break it down and use up this dissolved oxygen in the process.

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is defined as the amount of oxygen required by micro-organisms to decompose the biodegradable organic matter present in a certain volume of a sample of water. It is usually measured over 5 days at 20 degree C and expressed in ppm (mg/L).
