COD is the amount of oxygen needed to chemically oxidise all the oxidisable (organic + inorganic) matter in water; unlike BOD it also covers non-biodegradable matter, so it is higher than BOD.

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is a measure of the total pollution load of water. It is defined as the amount of oxygen required to oxidise all the oxidisable matter present in a given volume of a water sample by a chemical oxidising agent.

Measurement: A strong oxidising agent such as acidified potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) is used to oxidise the pollutants, and the oxygen consumed is expressed as ppm (mg/L).

Key points:

  • COD accounts for both biodegradable and non-biodegradable (chemically oxidisable) matter, whereas BOD accounts only for the biodegradable part. …
