In a mixture of non-interacting gases, the total pressure is simply the sum of each individual gas's own contribution (its partial pressure).

Statement: Dalton's law of partial pressures states that the total pressure exerted by a mixture of chemically non-reacting gases enclosed in a vessel of fixed volume, at a given temperature, is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of the individual gases — where the partial pressure of a gas is the pressure it would exert if it alone occupied the entire volume at that same temperature.

Mathematically, for a mixture of n gases with partial pressures p1,p2,p3,…,pnp_1, p_2, p_3, \ldots, p_n:

Ptotal=p1+p2+p3+⋯+pnP_{total} = p_1 + p_2 + p_3 + \cdots + p_n
