Friction is minimised by polishing, lubrication, using ball/roller bearings, streamlining, and air cushioning - all of which reduce direct rubbing contact between surfaces.

Friction, although often useful, wastes mechanical energy as heat and causes wear and tear of machine parts. The main methods used to reduce it are:

  1. Polishing: Rough surfaces have tiny projections that interlock. Polishing makes surfaces smoother, reducing the interlocking and hence friction.

  2. Lubrication: Applying oil, grease or graphite fills the tiny gaps and forms a thin film between the surfaces, so they slide over the lubricant instead of rubbing directly.

  3. Ball bearings and roller bearings: Rolling friction is much smaller than sliding friction. Bearings replace sliding contact with rolling contact, greatly reducing friction in wheels, shafts and axles.
