Centre of mass depends only on how mass is distributed; centre of gravity is where the total weight acts. They coincide in a uniform gravitational field.

Centre of mass (C.M.):

  • It is the point at which the whole mass of a body (or system) can be considered to be concentrated for the purpose of describing its translational motion.
  • Its position depends only on the distribution of mass in the body and not on any external field.
  • The motion of the C.M. of a system is governed by the net external force acting on the system.

Centre of gravity (C.G.):

  • It is the point at which the total weight of the body is taken to act, i.e. the point through which the resultant of the gravitational forces on all particles of the body passes.
  • Its position depends on the gravitational field.

Relation between them:

  • In a uniform gravitational field (as for ordinary bodies near the Earth's surface), the weight of each particle is proportional to its mass, so the centre of gravity coincides with the centre of mass. …
