Milt = male fish's sperm fluid; spawn = female fish's eggs — the two terms used in fisheries/aquaculture for fish reproductive products.

In pisciculture (fish farming) and fisheries biology, specific terms are used for the reproductive products of fish:

Milt

  • The whitish, viscous seminal fluid released by a male fish (also loosely used for the sperm-filled testis itself) during the breeding season.
  • Contains millions of spermatozoa suspended in seminal plasma.
  • In hatchery practice ('stripping'), milt is collected by gently pressing the abdomen of a ripe male and used to fertilise eggs artificially.

Spawn

  • The mass of eggs (ova) released by a female fish during breeding, and by extension the resulting fertilised eggs/young.
