1. Nicotine and addiction: Nicotine is a highly addictive alkaloid. It stimulates the adrenal gland to release adrenaline, which raises blood pressure and heart rate. Repeated use causes tolerance and dependence, and abrupt withdrawal produces craving, irritability and anxiety.
2. Tar and cancer: Tobacco tar contains a mixture of carcinogens. Chronic exposure of the epithelium lining the mouth, throat and lungs to these carcinogens is strongly linked to oral cancer (especially with chewing tobacco/gutkha) and lung cancer (especially with smoking).
3. Respiratory damage: Smoke irritates and inflames the bronchial lining, leading to chronic bronchitis (excess mucus, persistent cough) and, over years, emphysema — destruction of the alveolar walls that permanently reduces the lung's gas-exchange surface and causes breathlessness.
