Process of transverse binary fission in Paramecium:

- Nuclear division: The macronucleus elongates and divides amitotically (directly, without spindle formation), while the micronucleus divides by mitosis, ensuring each daughter cell receives one copy of each type of nucleus.
- Cytoplasmic division: The cell body elongates, and a constriction furrow appears roughly midway along the body, but oriented transversely — perpendicular to the long axis of the cell (unlike Euglena, where fission is longitudinal). This furrow deepens and progressively divides the cytoplasm into two halves.
- Organelle distribution/regeneration: Organelles such as the cytostome (cell mouth), contractile vacuoles, and cilia are either apportioned between the two halves or newly regenerated in each daughter cell as division proceeds. …
