Process of longitudinal binary fission in Euglena:
- Binary fission in Euglena is an ASEXUAL method of reproduction, and it occurs in the LONGITUDINAL (lengthwise) plane; it usually takes place in favourable conditions.
Steps:
- The organism first withdraws its flagellum (or the flagellum/kinetosome duplicates), and it may become rounded or come to rest.
- The NUCLEUS divides mitotically into two daughter nuclei.
- The kinetosome (basal body), flagellum and other organelles (such as the stigma and reservoir) are duplicated so that each daughter will get a complete set.
- A longitudinal cleavage furrow (groove) appears at the ANTERIOR end (near the reservoir).
- This furrow deepens and gradually extends BACKWARD (towards the posterior end), splitting the body along its length. …
