Paramecium is a slipper-shaped ciliate whose body plan includes an oral groove for feeding, contractile vacuoles for osmoregulation, and two types of nuclei.

Description of structure (in place of a hand-drawn figure, since no image can be produced here — the labelled parts below are exactly what such a diagram would show):

  • Shape: The body is elongated and slipper- (or shoe-) shaped, blunt and rounded at the anterior end and slightly pointed at the posterior end.
  • Pellicle and cilia: The body is covered by a firm but elastic pellicle, from which numerous short cilia arise in longitudinal rows over the entire body surface; these beat in a coordinated metachronal rhythm for locomotion.
  • Oral groove and cytostome: An oblique groove on one side (the oral groove) leads inward to the cytostome (cell mouth) and then to the funnel-shaped cytopharynx (gullet), through which food particles are swept in by ciliary currents.
  • Food vacuoles: Food collected at the base of the cytopharynx is packaged into food vacuoles, which circulate through the endoplasm for digestion.
  • Cytoproct (cell anus): A fixed point on the body surface where undigested food is expelled. …
