Phototaxis is movement oriented with respect to the direction of light, whereas photokinesis is simply a change in movement speed triggered by light intensity, without any directional component.

Phototaxis:

This is a directional response in which an organism (e.g., the flagellate Euglena, which possesses a light-sensitive eyespot/stigma) actively moves toward the light source (positive phototaxis) or away from it (negative phototaxis). The organism orients its body axis relative to the direction of the incoming light and steers accordingly — it is a true taxis, i.e., an oriented locomotory response to a directional stimulus.

Photokinesis:

This is a non-directional response in which the intensity of light (not its direction) alters the organism's speed or rate of random (undirected) movement. For example, an organism might move faster in dim light and slower — or become quiescent — in bright light (or vice versa), without turning toward or away from the light source. The result is that organisms tend to accumulate in favourable light zones purely as a statistical consequence of differential speed, not by active steering.
