Small-scale industries, now organised under this MSME framework, are important to the Indian economy for several reasons. They require relatively little capital to establish, allowing first-generation entrepreneurs to start businesses and spreading industrial activity into smaller towns and rural areas, thereby supporting balanced regional development rather than concentrating industry only in already-developed clusters. Many small-scale units function as ancillary suppliers, providing components, parts and semi-finished goods to large-scale industries, linking the small and large segments of the industrial economy.
