Q.Explain the composition of the services sector. What are its major components?
The tertiary sector covers a wide and varied range of activities, usually grouped as follows.
Trade — wholesale and retail trade — connects producers with final consumers by buying, storing and distributing goods, without changing their physical form; it remains one of the largest employers among services, especially in its small, informal retail form.
Transport, storage and communication move goods, people and information from one place to another — road, rail, air and water transport, warehousing, postal services, telecommunications and the internet — and are essential infrastructure for every other sector of the economy.
Banking, insurance and other financial services mobilise the savings of households and firms and direct them into productive investment, while insurance spreads risks that an individual producer or family could not otherwise bear; capital markets and, increasingly, digital financial services fall under this same head.
Real estate and business services include the buying, selling, renting and developing of property, along with professional support services such as legal, accounting, consulting and human-resource services that firms often outsource rather than perform in-house.
Public administration and defence are services the government itself provides — civil administration, justice, law and order, and national defence — financed from public revenue rather than sold for a price.
Social and personal services, chiefly education and health, directly build human welfare and capability, while tourism and hospitality (hotels, restaurants, travel) have expanded rapidly alongside rising incomes and improved connectivity.
Finally, Information Technology and IT-enabled Services — software development, business process outsourcing, and more recently data analytics, fintech and digital platforms — form the most recently prominent addition to this list and are examined separately later in the chapter because of their outsized role in India's recent growth.
The services sector's major components are trade; transport, storage and communication; banking, insurance and other financial services; real estate and business services; public administration and defence; education, health and social/personal services; tourism and hospitality; and Information Technology/IT-enabled Services — each performing a distinct function in supporting production, exchange and consumer welfare.
