One of the clearest features of India's economic development since Independence, and particularly since the economic reforms of 1991, has been the steady rise in the share of national output originating in the tertiary sector. In the early decades after Independence, agriculture and industry together accounted for the greater part of national income; over time, as the economy opened up to trade and foreign investment, as incomes rose, and as the information technology revolution made it possible to produce and export many services on a large scale, the tertiary sector's share of Gross Value Added rose steadily.

In recent years, services have come to account for well over half of India's GVA, making the tertiary sector by a clear margin the largest of the three broad sectors, ahead of both industry and agriculture. This is a genuinely important structural fact about the modern Indian economy, and distinguishes India's growth path somewhat from some other developing economies, where industrialisation has more typically preceded, rather than run alongside, a rise in services. …
