Primary amines react with chloroform and alcoholic KOH to form foul-smelling alkyl isocyanides (carbylamines) - a characteristic test for primary amines.

The carbylamine (isocyanide) reaction is a specific test to distinguish primary amines (1 degree) from secondary and tertiary amines. When a primary amine is heated with chloroform (CHCl3) and alcoholic potassium hydroxide (KOH), it forms an alkyl isocyanide (carbylamine), which has an extremely unpleasant, offensive odour.

Mechanism outline: alcoholic KOH first generates dichlorocarbene (:CCl2) from chloroform, which reacts with the free lone pair on the amine's nitrogen; subsequent elimination of HCl (twice, with more KOH) gives the isocyanide.
