A primary amine heated with CHCl3 and alcoholic KOH gives a foul-smelling isocyanide (carbylamine); e.g. C2H5NH2 -> C2H5NC.

The carbylamine reaction (isocyanide test) is used to identify primary amines (both aliphatic and aromatic). Secondary and tertiary amines do not give this test.

Reaction: a primary amine, when warmed with chloroform (CHCl3) in the presence of alcoholic potassium hydroxide (KOH), produces an alkyl (or aryl) isocyanide - the carbylamine - which has an extremely offensive, unpleasant smell.
