The transformer works purely on mutual induction: an alternating current in the primary winding creates a time-varying flux in the shared core, which induces an alternating emf in the secondary winding.

Phenomenon: Mutual electromagnetic induction.

How it works: A transformer has a primary coil and a secondary coil wound on a common laminated soft-iron core. When an alternating current is passed through the primary coil, it sets up a continuously changing magnetic flux in the core. Since the same core links both coils, this changing flux also passes through the secondary coil. By Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, this changing flux induces an alternating emf in the secondary coil, even though the two coils are electrically isolated from each other (linked only through the magnetic flux).
