A transformer's working principle is mutual induction: an alternating current in the primary coil sets up a changing flux that links the secondary coil and induces an emf in it.

A transformer consists of two coils, the primary and the secondary, wound on a common laminated soft-iron core. When an alternating current is passed through the primary coil, it produces a continuously changing magnetic flux in the core (by Ampere's law / the current-carrying coil's own field). Because the secondary coil is wound on the same core, this changing flux also links the secondary coil.
