Methanogens ferment organic waste anaerobically to give methane-rich biogas; fisheries is the rearing/harvesting of fish and other aquatic animals for food and livelihood.

(i) Role of micro-organisms in biogas production. Biogas is a mixture of gases (predominantly methane, CH₄, with CO₂ and H₂) produced by the microbial breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen (anaerobically). Certain bacteria called methanogens — e.g. Methanobacterium — are present in cattle dung (gobar) and in the anaerobic sludge of sewage treatment. In a biogas plant, cattle dung slurry is digested by these bacteria; they ferment the organic matter and release biogas, which is collected and used as a fuel for cooking and lighting.
