Anaerobic methanogens (e.g. Methanobacterium) ferment organic waste and produce methane-rich biogas.

Concept. Biogas is a mixture of gases produced by microbes during the anaerobic degradation of organic matter; it is predominantly methane (CH₄) with CO₂ and H₂ and is used as fuel and for lighting.

Role of microbes:

  • A group of anaerobic bacteria called methanogens — e.g. Methanobacterium — carry out the process. These bacteria are also present in the rumen of cattle and in the anaerobic sludge of sewage treatment.
  • In a biogas plant, cattle dung ('gobar') slurry is fed into a closed digester. Under anaerobic conditions the methanogens decompose the cellulosic organic matter, producing methane (the combustible gas) along with CO₂ and H₂. …
