A transformer works by mutual induction; a common cause of energy loss is copper (I²R) heating of the windings.

Principle of working. A transformer works on the principle of mutual induction: when an alternating current flows in the primary coil, it sets up a continuously changing magnetic flux, which is guided by a laminated soft-iron core to link the secondary coil. This changing flux induces an alternating EMF in the secondary (Faraday's law):

VsVp=NsNp\frac{V_s}{V_p} = \frac{N_s}{N_p}

A reason for energy loss. In a real transformer some energy is lost. Copper loss: the primary and secondary windings have finite resistance RR, so a current II through them dissipates heat at rate I2RI^2R.
