Question of 50
Q.Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below — Transformer is a device which works on the principle of mutual induction. It is used to change the potential of alternating current. It consists of a rectangular or circular laminated core of soft iron placed one upon another in a regular way. Two separate copper coils are wound around it. Out of these coils, one coil consists of thick copper wire whereas the other consists of thin copper wire. In a transformer, electric energy is converted into magnetic energy and magnetic energy is converted into electric energy.
(i) Give the types of transformer. [1]
(ii) Why is the iron core of a transformer made laminated? [1]
(iii) What is mutual induction? Write the unit of mutual inductance in the SI system. [2]

- Types of transformer: A step-up transformer increases the voltage from primary to secondary (secondary has more turns than primary), and a step-down transformer decreases the voltage from primary to secondary (secondary has fewer turns than primary).
- Why the iron core is laminated: The changing magnetic flux through the solid iron core would itself induce circulating (eddy) currents within the core, which dissipate energy as heat and reduce efficiency. By constructing the core from thin, mutually insulated sheets (laminae) instead of one solid block, the possible paths for eddy currents are broken up, greatly increasing the effective resistance to these currents and hence significantly reducing eddy-current power loss — without affecting the main (useful) flux linking the two windings. …
