Counting electrons crossing a cross-section gives I=neAvdI = neAv_d.

Concept. When a potential difference is applied across a conductor of cross-sectional area AA, the free electrons (number density nn per unit volume, charge ee) acquire a small net average velocity vdv_d called the drift velocity.

Derivation. Consider a section of the conductor. In time tt every electron moves a distance vd tv_d\,t, so all electrons within a length vdtv_d t of the cross-section cross it.

Volume of this segment =A (vdt)= A\,(v_d t).

Number of electrons in it =n A vd t= n\,A\,v_d\,t.

Total charge crossing the section =q=(nAvdt) e= q = (n A v_d t)\,e.

Current is charge per unit time: …
