Q.(i) Let A={1,2,3,4}A = \{1,2,3,4\} and B={5,6}B = \{5,6\}, with arrows 1→51\to5, 2→52\to5, 3→63\to6, 4→64\to6. Classify this function.

(ii) Let A={1,2,3}A = \{1,2,3\} and B={4,5,6,7}B = \{4,5,6,7\}, with arrows 1→41\to4, 2→52\to5, 3→63\to6 (77 unused). Classify this function.

Part (i): 1→51\to5, 2→52\to5, 3→63\to6, 4→64\to6.

  • One-one vs many-one: element 55 receives two arrows (from 11 and 22), and element 66 also receives two arrows (from 33 and 44) — this is many-one.
  • Onto vs into: the range is {5,6}\{5,6\}, which equals the co-domain B={5,6}B=\{5,6\} exactly — every element of BB is used, so this is onto.
  • Bijective? No — a function must be BOTH one-one and onto to be bijective; this one is onto but not one-one, so it is not bijective.

Part (ii): 1→41\to4, 2→52\to5, 3→63\to6 (element 77 unused).

  • One-one vs many-one: the three arrows land on three different elements (44, 55, 66), no element of BB shared by two arrows — this is one-one. …
