A dicotyledonous seed is covered by a protective seed coat made of two layers: a thicker outer testa and a thinner inner tegmen. Within, the bulk of the seed is the embryo, which has two large, often fleshy cotyledons attached to a short embryonal axis. The part of this axis above the point of attachment of the cotyledons is the epicotyl, ending in the plumule (the young shoot tip), while the part below is the hypocotyl, ending in the radicle (the young root tip), which is typically covered by a protective root cap and root tip.
