Q.Where is the midbrain located in the human brain, and what function does it perform?
Concept understanding — Midbrain and Hindbrain
The midbrain and hindbrain lie below the forebrain and control many essential, largely automatic functions. The midbrain, positioned between the thalamus/hypothalamus and the pons, is a small relay and reflex centre that processes visual and auditory information and coordinates reflexes such as reflex eye and head movements. The hindbrain consists of the pons, medulla oblongata and cerebellum. The pons acts as a relay bridge between the cerebrum, cerebellum and spinal cord and contributes to regulating breathing. The medulla oblongata, continuous with the spinal cord, houses vital centres controlling respiration, cardiovascular reflexes and gastric secretions, making it essential for survival. The midbrain, pons and medulla together form the brainstem, the connecting stalk between the brain and spinal cord. The cerebellum coordinates voluntary movement, maintains muscle tone, and maintains posture and balance by comparing intended and actual movement using feedback from muscles, joints and the inner ear's vestibular apparatus.
