The cell body (soma/perikaryon) contains the nucleus and Nissl granules (rough endoplasmic reticulum) and is the main site of protein synthesis and metabolic activity for the whole cell. Dendrites are short, branching processes that receive signals from other neurons and conduct them towards the cell body. The axon hillock is the cone-shaped region where the axon arises from the soma, and it is usually where an impulse is actually triggered, being the site of lowest threshold.
