For a shell with principal quantum number nn, the azimuthal quantum number ll can take any of the nn values 0,1,…,(n−1)0, 1, \ldots, (n-1), and each value of ll defines one subshell. So the number of subshells in a shell always equals nn itself. For n=4n = 4: l=0,1,2,3l = 0, 1, 2, 3, giving the four subshells 4s,4p,4d,4f4s, 4p, 4d, 4f.
