Nitrogen (Z=7Z = 7) has the configuration 1s2 2s2 2p31s^2\,2s^2\,2p^3; the three electrons of interest occupy the 2p2p subshell, which has three degenerate orbitals: 2px2p_x, 2py2p_y, 2pz2p_z.

By Hund's rule of maximum multiplicity, electrons occupying a set of degenerate orbitals first fill every orbital singly, with parallel spin, before any pairing occurs.
