Setting up. Take the common direction of motion of both cars as positive. Car A has velocity vA=20v_A = 20 m/s and car B has velocity vB=15v_B = 15 m/s, both measured with respect to the ground.

Velocity of A relative to B. By the definition in Section 2.9,

vAB=vA−vB=20−15=+5 m/sv_{AB} = v_A - v_B = 20 - 15 = +5\ \text{m/s}

The positive sign (same as the common direction of motion) means that, as seen from car B, car A appears to move forward (pull ahead) at 5 m/s.

Velocity of B relative to A.

vBA=vB−vA=15−20=−5 m/sv_{BA} = v_B - v_A = 15 - 20 = -5\ \text{m/s}

The negative sign means that, as seen from car A, car B appears to move backward (fall behind) at 5 m/s — exactly consistent with vBA=−vABv_{BA} = -v_{AB}. …
