Renewable sources (solar, wind, tidal) are inexhaustible, abundant in tropical India and pollution-free, so expanding them can bridge the demand-supply gap and ease the energy crisis.

India faces an energy crisis because continued economic development and population growth are driving the demand for energy faster than the country can produce it, while its commercial sources have serious limits. This crisis can largely be overcome by using renewable (non-conventional) sources of energy, for the following reasons:

  1. They are inexhaustible. Commercial sources like coal and petroleum are exhaustible and will one day run out, and India already depends heavily on imported crude and petroleum. Renewable sources such as solar, wind and tidal power do not get used up.
  2. India has vast potential. As a tropical country, India has almost unlimited potential for producing solar, wind and tidal energy, provided suitable cost-effective technologies (some already available) are used. …
