The main drawbacks of India's health-care system are:
- Low public expenditure. Government spending on health is very low — about 8.2 per cent of total government spending and only 3.9 per cent of GDP — abysmally low compared with other countries.
- Inadequate and under-equipped public facilities. Less than 20 per cent of the population uses public health facilities; only 38 per cent of PHCs have the required number of doctors and only 30 per cent have enough medicines, and rural PHCs often lack even X-ray or blood-testing facilities.
- A sharp rural-urban divide. Though about 70 per cent of people live in rural areas, only a fifth of hospitals are rural; there are just 0.36 hospitals per lakh people in rural areas against 3.6 in urban areas, and villagers lack specialised care. …
