The Amrita Devi Bishnoi movement is traditionally dated to around 1730, and took place at the village of Khejarli, near Jodhpur, in what is now the state of Rajasthan. According to the traditional historical account, the ruler of the time sent workers to the forest near Khejarli to fell Khejri trees (Prosopis cineraria) in order to obtain timber. The Bishnoi villagers of Khejarli, who hold Khejri trees sacred and depend on them for fodder and shade in their arid homeland, objected to the felling and tried to stop it, leading to the confrontation that followed.
The movement is traditionally dated to around 1730, at Khejarli village near Jodhpur, Rajasthan, triggered by the ruler's men being sent to fell sacred Khejri trees for timber, which the Bishnoi villagers resisted.
