Composting is a method of managing biodegradable solid waste in which organic material -- kitchen/food waste, garden trimmings and similar matter -- is piled or contained under conditions that allow naturally occurring micro-organisms to decompose it aerobically, i.e. in the presence of oxygen. Over time this decomposition converts the raw organic waste into a dark, crumbly, nutrient-rich material called compost.
