A sanitary landfill is an engineered method of solid waste disposal in which waste is deposited in compacted layers at a carefully constructed site, with an impermeable lining placed beneath the waste to prevent contaminated liquid (leachate) from seeping into groundwater, and a layer of soil added over the waste each day to control odour, pests and the escape of gas. This is very different from uncontrolled, open dumping, where waste is simply left exposed with no lining and no covering.
