Exposure to radioactive waste poses serious health hazards because the ionising radiation it emits can damage living tissue and genetic material (DNA) in exposed organisms. This damage increases the risk of cancers developing over time, and at very high exposure levels can cause acute radiation sickness, with immediate and severe effects on the body.
