Q.What is solid waste? List the major sources of solid waste generated in a typical Indian urban household and city.
Solid waste is any discarded solid or semi-solid material resulting from human activity that its original owner no longer wants. A typical Indian city generates it from several distinct sources: domestic/household waste (food waste, paper, plastic packaging, glass, e-waste); commercial waste from shops, markets and offices (mostly packaging and paper); construction and demolition waste (rubble, concrete, wood, metal scrap); industrial waste (process residues and scrap, sometimes hazardous); agricultural waste (crop residue, husk, dung, pesticide containers); and biomedical waste from hospitals and clinics (soiled dressings, syringes), which must legally be collected and disposed of completely separately because of infection risk.
Solid waste is discarded solid/semi-solid material; its major sources in an Indian city are domestic, commercial, construction/demolition, industrial, agricultural and biomedical activity, each contributing a characteristically different type of waste.
