Step 1. A pedigree chart is constructed for a family across several generations (labelled I, II, III… top to bottom), recording every individual's phenotype for the trait of interest using standard symbols.

Step 2. The chart is then examined for HOW the affected/carrier symbol recurs: does the trait skip generations (suggestive of recessive inheritance) or appear in every generation without exception (suggestive of dominant inheritance)?
