Diethyl ether was historically the first widely used general anaesthetic in surgery, valued for reliably inducing unconsciousness. It has since been largely replaced in modern medicine because it is highly flammable (a serious hazard near surgical equipment) and because it causes significant post-operative nausea and has a slow, unpleasant induction and recovery compared with modern anaesthetic agents.
