Phenol and ethanol are distinguished by the FeCl3 colour test; ethers of phenol cleave at the alkyl-oxygen bond with HBr; aspirin is made from phenol via Kolbe's reaction then acetylation.

  1. Adding a few drops of neutral aqueous FeCl3 to phenol produces a characteristic violet/purple colouration (due to a coloured iron-phenolate complex). Ethyl alcohol shows no such colour change with FeCl3. This simple test distinguishes the two immediately.
  2. Phenetole (PhO-C2H5) is an aryl alkyl ether. On heating with HBr, ethers of phenol characteristically cleave at the alkyl-oxygen bond (not the aryl-oxygen bond, since the aryl-O bond has partial double-bond character from resonance with the ring and resists SN2 attack). Bromide attacks the ethyl carbon: PhOC2H5+HBr→PhOH+C2H5BrPhOC_2H_5 + HBr \rightarrow PhOH + C_2H_5Br giving phenol and ethyl bromide. …
