SO2 and Cl2 both bleach coloured matter but by opposite mechanisms — reduction versus oxidation — which is why SO2's bleaching is temporary and Cl2's is permanent.

Difference 1 — Mechanism: SO2 bleaches by reduction: it combines with the coloured (unsaturated) organic matter to form a colourless compound. Cl2 bleaches by oxidation: in the presence of moisture it forms nascent oxygen, Cl2+H2O→2HCl+[O]Cl_2 + H_2O \rightarrow 2HCl + [O], which oxidises the colouring matter.
