Interhalogen compounds form when two different halogens combine; the larger, less electronegative halogen is the central atom, bonded to the smaller, more electronegative halogen(s).

Definition: Interhalogen compounds are binary compounds containing two different halogen (Group 17) elements bonded together. They form because halogens, though all reactive nonmetals, differ enough in size and electronegativity that one can act as a central atom around which the smaller halogen atoms are arranged.

General formulas: XY, XY3, XY5, XY7 (X = larger, less electronegative halogen; Y = smaller, more electronegative halogen; always Y is a smaller halogen than X, e.g. F or Cl).
