f(x)=5−∣x−1∣f(x)=5-|x-1| is largest when the subtracted term ∣x−1∣|x-1| is smallest, i.e. zero.

Given f(x)=5−∣x−1∣f(x)=5-|x-1|. Since ∣x−1∣≥0|x-1|\ge0 for all real xx, with equality only at x=1x=1:

f(x)=5−∣x−1∣≤5f(x)=5-|x-1|\le5

Equality holds exactly when ∣x−1∣=0|x-1|=0, i.e. x=1x=1, giving f(1)=5−0=5f(1)=5-0=5.
