The dielectric constant is the factor by which a material increases a capacitor's capacitance; inserting a slab of thickness t < d effectively reduces the plate separation's contribution to d − t(1 − 1/k).

(a) Dielectric constant (k, also called relative permittivity) is the ratio of the permittivity of a medium to the permittivity of free space, k=ε/ε0k=\varepsilon/\varepsilon_0. Equivalently, it is the factor by which the capacitance of a capacitor increases when the space between its plates is completely filled with that dielectric, compared to vacuum.
