Diamagnetic: atoms have no net magnetic moment; an applied field INDUCES a small opposing moment (Lenz's-law-like effect on orbiting electrons), so the substance is WEAKLY REPELLED, moving toward the weaker part of a non-uniform field. χ\chi is small and negative, essentially temperature-independent. Examples: copper, bismuth.

Paramagnetic: atoms carry a small permanent moment, but random thermal orientation cancels their net effect until a field is applied, which partially aligns them, so the substance is WEAKLY ATTRACTED, moving toward the stronger part of a non-uniform field. χ\chi is small and positive, and falls with rising temperature.
