Q.Explain why the area enclosed by a material's B-H hysteresis loop represents energy dissipated as heat in the material per cycle of magnetisation, and explain why a transformer core should be made of a material with a thin (low-area) loop while a permanent magnet should be made of a material with a fat (high-area) loop.

As a ferromagnetic sample is taken through a full magnetisation cycle, its atomic domains must repeatedly realign every time HH reverses direction (Section 1.10); this realignment involves internal friction-like losses that dissipate energy as heat rather than being recovered. The enclosed AREA of the B-H loop is the standard qualitative measure of this energy lost per unit volume, per complete cycle (Section 1.12).

A transformer core carries alternating current, so it is driven around the hysteresis loop 50 (or 60) times every second; even a small loop area, multiplied by that many cycles per second, adds up to significant wasted heat and reduced efficiency. It should therefore be made of a magnetically SOFT material (low retentivity, low coercivity -- soft iron) whose THIN, NARROW loop keeps this repeated energy loss to a minimum.

A permanent magnet, by contrast, is magnetised only ONCE and must then hold that magnetisation indefinitely without any further cycling -- loop area (repeated-cycling energy loss) is irrelevant to it. What matters instead is that it resist losing its magnetism, which needs HIGH retentivity (so BB stays large at H=0H=0) and HIGH coercivity (so it resists an accidental reverse field) -- exactly the magnetically HARD material with a FAT loop.

✓Final answer

Loop area = heat dissipated per cycle; transformer cores use a soft, thin-loop material (minimise repeated-cycling loss); permanent magnets use a hard, fat-loop material (maximise retained magnetism).
