Refraction is governed by two laws. First, the incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the refracting surface at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane. Second, for light of a given colour (wavelength) passing between a given pair of media, the ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction is always the same constant, however the angle of incidence itself is varied — this is Snell's law, sin⁡isin⁡r=1n2\dfrac{\sin i}{\sin r}={}_1n_2, where 1n2{}_1n_2 is called the refractive index of the second medium with respect to the first.
