In the formula n2v−n1u=n2−n1R\dfrac{n_2}{v}-\dfrac{n_1}{u}=\dfrac{n_2-n_1}{R}, n1n_1 is the absolute refractive index of the medium the incident light is travelling through before it meets the surface (the medium containing the object), and n2n_2 is the refractive index of the medium the light enters after crossing the surface. uu and vv are, as usual, the object and image distances, both measured from the pole PP of the spherical refracting surface, following the New Cartesian sign convention (so uu is negative for a real object). RR is the radius of curvature of the spherical surface itself, and it too is signed by the same convention applied to the position of the surface's centre of curvature: RR is taken positive if that centre of curvature lies on the same side as the outgoing (refracted, transmitted) light, and negative if it lies on the same side as the incoming (incident) light/object.
