Chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons deplete it, forming the ozone hole and causing serious health and environmental harm. This is an AP Intermediate 2nd-year Economics topic on environmental degradation.
Meaning: The ozone layer is a region of the earth's upper atmosphere (the stratosphere) that contains a relatively high concentration of ozone gas. Its chief importance is that it absorbs most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation and prevents it from reaching the earth's surface, thereby protecting humans, animals and plants.
Ozone depletion: The release of certain man-made chemicals, especially chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) used in refrigerators, air-conditioners, aerosols and foams, destroys ozone molecules and thins the ozone layer. The severe thinning over the polar regions is known as the 'ozone hole'.
