Meaning. Sustainability (or sustainable development) is development that satisfies the needs of the present generation without reducing the capacity of future generations to satisfy their own needs. It requires balancing economic progress with social well-being and protection of the environment, so that growth today does not destroy the resource base of tomorrow.
Components of sustainability:
1. Economic sustainability. The economy should grow steadily and provide incomes, employment and goods over the long run, using resources efficiently and avoiding waste, so that prosperity can be maintained.
2. Social sustainability. Development must be inclusive and equitable - ensuring education, health, housing, social justice and a fair distribution of benefits across present and future generations.
